On her MSNBC show on Wednesday afternoon, host Andrea Mitchell hoped that the war in Ukraine was “at least helping the Democrats” to move politically towards a midterm election. The Washington Post Deputy National Editor Phil Rocker agrees with his biased assessment and points out how President Biden is trying to falsely use the conflict as a “scapegoat” for higher gas prices.
“And I would like to ask both of you quickly about the medium term because we have seen that the declining poll rating of the President can be stabilized and even move forward with the way he has reacted in Ukraine.” Mitchell told his guests at 12:00 pm ET. After acknowledging inflation and “other issues” faced by Democrats, he was surprised with interest: “Do you think it’s at least helping the Democrats and helping the White House when they go to the medium term?”
The rocker shook: “You know, it certainly gives Biden the opportunity to be the strongest leader he’s ever been in and he’s looking forward to his first year as president.” The Post The reporter then applauded the dishonest White House spin for blaming months of inflation and high gas prices for Ukraine’s weeks-old war:
And most importantly, the issue of inflation, which has caused so much trouble for Democrats politically over the past few months, has allowed Biden to place some blame for rising gas prices across the country and other consumer prices. On Putin and Russia. So he has some scapegoats that can be helpful during the midterm season.
Amna Nawaz, chief correspondent of PBS News Hour, immediately agreed with Rooker: “Yeah, I think Phil’s spot on. Look, I think there is a way to refocus everyone’s attention and priorities on the war. “ He preached that “almost half of all Americans approve of the way the war in Ukraine has been conducted so far” and argued:
And you have to remember, this is a catastrophic response to the end of the war in Afghanistan, when all its foreign policy credentials were really questioned. Was he really a president who could lead the world? And Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has changed everything.
He claimed “Americans are seeing the president in a new light.” And “seems to support what the president is doing.”
Back Monday, MSNBC lamented that Biden was not getting a “Zelensky bounce” in the war-torn Europe, and now Mitchell’s show is trying to understand how the war in Ukraine is “helping the Democrats.” Even in the midst of a severe international crisis, the left-wing cable channel does not hesitate to push mad politics.

Andrea Mitchell: And I would like to ask both of you quickly about the medium term because we have seen that the President’s declining poll rating is stable and even moving forward with the way he has reacted to Ukraine. But it still has inflation, the Fed, you know, is going to raise rates today, and you know, it has other problems. Phil, do you want to take it first? Do you think it’s at least helping the Democrats and helping the White House as they go into the medium term?
Phil Rocker [THE WASHINGTON POST DEPUTY NATIONAL EDITOR]: You know, it certainly gives Biden a chance to be the strong leader he preached and he looks forward to in his first year as president. And most importantly, the issue of inflation, which has caused so much trouble for Democrats politically over the past few months, has allowed Biden to place some blame for rising gas prices across the country and other consumer prices. On Putin and Russia. So he has some scapegoats that can be helpful during the midterm season.
Mitchell: Amna, are you thinking about it?
Amna Nawaz [PBS NEWSHOUR CHIEF CORRESPONDENT]: Yes, I think Phil is on the spot. Look, I think there is a way to refocus everyone’s attention and priorities on the battle. And at the moment when you look at the number of votes, most Americans – about half the Americans, I must say, not the majority – approve of the way almost half the Americans have handled the war in Ukraine.
And you have to remember, this is a catastrophic response to the end of the war in Afghanistan, when all its foreign policy credentials were really questioned. Was he really a president who could lead the world? And Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has changed everything.
So Americans are seeing the president in a new light. Whether this will lead to further support in the meantime, we do not know. I mean, I think we have to wait and see. There is a lot of time before that. But for now, most American presidents seem to support what they are doing.
