President Biden backtracked during his press conference in Brussels on Thursday when he announced that sanctions had never been in place to prevent Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine, despite repeated declarations by the administration. On The Lead, CNN chief political analyst and world affairs analyst Susan Glasser reacted to Biden’s dishonesty by talking about former President Trump.
Guest host Pamela Brown simply asked Glasser to comment on the overturning. What did you do – his answer to that and the pushback he gave that it was never intended? “
Glaser decided not to answer that question and instead discussed how sanctions affect Putin’s war effort. Try to close the Russian economy, the military-industrial complex, but it will take time. It can affect the war, but not the short-term. “
He then turned to Trump and said, “You know, the tragedy is that the war started. There were sanctions that could be lifted year after year from 2014, but one last thing to remind you is that before Joe Biden we had a U.S. The president of the United States, who at one point was considering lifting sanctions, not only wanted Russia to be part of the G-20, but also to join the G-7 in the summer of 2020. So, obviously, this tragedy There were steps. “
Something to think about is not the same thing as doing it, but Biden’s tone change has nothing to do with Glasser’s views on Trump’s Russia policy.

Pamela Brown: Susan, Quick, President Biden did a little experimentation today when asked why sanctions weren’t a barrier. What did you do – that– his answer and the pushback he gave was not meant to be?
Susan Glaser: Look, when you impose sanctions after the war, you know, I think there’s a huge effort to move forward and basically shut down the Russian economy, the military-industrial complex, but that’s going to take time. May have effects but not short term effects. You know, the tragedy is that the war started. There were sanctions that could be lifted year after year from 2014, but one final thing to remind you is that before Joe Biden we had a US president who at one point was considering lifting sanctions, not just Russia. . Of the G-20, but he recently made that offer in the summer of 2020 to join the G-7. So, obviously there were many steps towards unraveling this tragedy.
