According to a Forbes report, scientists have named the animal Silipsimopodi bidenii, which is derived from the Greek words “Silipsimos” for “prehensile” and “podi” for “legs” and “bideni” after President Biden. The creature lived 330 million years ago in what is now Montana, and is thought to be the oldest known relative of the octopus and vampire squid.
Christopher Holen, lead author of the research at the American Museum of Natural History and Yale University, says it is the first and only known vampiropod to have 10 functional appendices. According to Whelan, the newly discovered fossil is 82 million years older than the oldest known animal in the group. This is even more time to separate the species from Tyrannosaurus rex.
Whelan said the paper was submitted for publication shortly after the “revolt” at the Capitol. The group wanted to name the fossil and its species after Biden to show its gratitude for its climate change plans, as well as its insistence that the public “listen to scientists.”
“Somehow I wanted to acknowledge the moment in a way that was more positive and far-sighted,” he said. “I was encouraged by President Biden’s plans for tackling ethno-climate change, and his general feeling that politicians should listen to scientists,” he added.
