“Spider-Man: No Way Home” actor Andrew Garfield thinks that the trend in Hollywood is that actors can only act as a minority if they are that minority in real life, which is unreasonable. Of course we’re not talking about a white man playing a black man or vice versa, because that would be unrealistic, but why can’t a gay man play the role of a straight man if he can?
This is called acting.
Garfield made the point in an interview with The Telegraph earlier this week, saying that casting based on whether an actor’s true identity matched the role they were trying for would be “death” to the cast.
Garfield began his remarks by saying that the controversy was “due to the combination of two different conversations.” “One is about equality of opportunity, and I’m totally in it. Because we want a world where everyone gets a fair go, regardless of your sexual orientation, your color or your heritage, ”he added.
He sounds like a conservative there. We are all about equal opportunity; Whatever your identity, it does not exclude you from your pursuit of happiness. That is why actors should play roles that are not reflected in real life. If they can master a job that is innately about pretending, then they have qualified.
Garfield believes so. He added, “But the other is about sympathetic imagination, and if we only allow people to cast them exactly as they are, it will be his death.”
Imagine if Forrest Gump was made today and they had to leave Tom Hanks because his IQ is much higher in real life than the character.
Garfield continued: “So two separate conversations have to happen at the same time. Because I’m not willing to support the death of a sympathetic fantasy. “Well, that’s what we want to argue for. Shouldn’t.
Again, should we dismiss Robert Downey Jr. because he’s not as smart or tech-savvy as his onscreen Iron Man opponent? And does a straight man essentially only have to play a straight man? For leftists, often yes.
But gay British actor Ian McKellan recently wondered if this kind of casting is pure, is anyone really going to tell him that he can’t act straight people? “What’s the argument that a simple man can’t play the role of a homosexual, and if so, does that mean I can’t play the straight part and I’m not allowed to explore the fascinating aspects of Macbeth’s heterosexuality?”
Okay, get McClane out of Macbeth (he was awesome in a role). Would you be as good as a product without the guy who really plays Gandalf? McClane asked, “We’re acting. We are pretending. “
Of course there are exceptions. You wouldn’t put a black actor in the role of a historical white person, because that’s an incredible portrayal. You will not believe the game that pretends. Playing the same role for a girl who is always a man. (On the other hand, the young men played the female characters of Shakespeare.)
