Tsunami warning issued for Fukushima after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Japan

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook northern Japan on Wednesday night and triggered a tsunami alert in Fukushima prefecture.

ABC News reports:

A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Fukushima coast of northern Japan on Wednesday evening, triggering a tsunami alert.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck 60 kilometers (36 miles) below sea level.

The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami 11 years ago that also caused the nuclear plant to melt. Wednesday’s quake came just days after the 11th anniversary of the March 2011 earthquake.

The quake struck Japan on Wednesday night, just days after the 11th anniversary of the 2011 9.0 earthquake, which was followed by a devastating tsunami and the melting of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
